Chinese Hack of US Treasury Breached Sanctions Office: Report

According to a report by the Washington Post, Chinese government hackers breached the U.S. Treasury office, which was responsible for economic sanctions.

Chinese hackers breached the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control and Office of Financial Research and targeted Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s office.

The U.S. Treasury disclosed that unclassified documents were stolen in a major cyberattack, but did not specify which departments were affected.

China denied the allegations, calling them “irrational” and “without any factual basis,” and stated it combats all forms of cyberattacks.

The Treasury Department said hackers compromised the third-party cybersecurity provider BeyondTrust.

The Chinese government may be particularly interested in U.S. plans to impose financial sanctions on Chinese entities.

U.S. sanctions are a key tool in foreign policy, with China frequently targeted, especially regarding its role in Russia’s oil trade amid the war in Ukraine.
