Namita Thapar, a prominent investor from Shark Tank India and Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, has recently made a significant statement about work-life balance that has ignited a debate on social media.

Thapar argued that individuals working 70 hours a week should reconsider marriage and parenting, as such demanding schedules prevent them from dedicating adequate time to their families and children.

In an interview with ‘Humans of Bombay’, Thapar discussed the challenging lifestyles of working professionals, noting that many people become so engrossed in their careers that they fail to allocate time for their families.

She stated, “If you are working 70 hours or more a week and barely sleeping, when will you have time for your child or partner? If you cannot be present enough as a parent, it will only cause stress and trouble for the family.”

Thapar emphasised that being a parent entails a responsibility to care for one’s child, which is equally important as one’s career. She stressed that financial support alone from parents is insufficient; their time and love are crucial as well.

During the discussion, Thapar also urged companies to take responsibility. She acknowledged that higher-level executives might need to work more for their careers but asserted, “It is essential for regular employees to maintain a balance in working hours. Companies must understand that working 70 hours weekly should not become the norm. While it may be acceptable temporarily due to project deadlines, a continuous schedule like this can be mentally and physically harmful.”

Thapar’s comments elicited mixed reactions on social media. Some individuals appreciated her perspective, highlighting the importance of work-life balance. One user remarked, “Namita has put forward a truth. Many people become so busy with their careers that they neglect their children. Work-life balance is very important.”

Conversely, others criticised her view. One user questioned, “If this logic is followed, then doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals should not have children because their jobs are also highly demanding.” Another user argued, “Women should not be forced to choose only between career and family. They should have the option to balance both.”

The debate around work-life balance has intensified with Thapar’s statement. In today’s fast-paced world, this issue has gained significant importance. Many companies are now making strides in this direction by offering flexible working hours, hybrid models, and work-from-home options. However, in several industries, extra working hours are still seen as a success mantra.
