SUKKUR: Sujawal Police on Friday claimed to have traced and arrested robbers who looted a foreign cycling couple, Poland national Kowalczyk Jakub Tomasz and Scantamburlo Marie Elisabeth, in Sindh earlier this week.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Sujawal Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, while addressing a press conference in his office, said that by using modern technology and intelligence gathering, police had arrested accused Nadim Wiharo and Maqbool.
Pirzada added that the suspected criminals had intercepted the foreign tourists on Badin bypass in Sujawal a few days ago and snatched their mobile phones.
In a shameful incident, the foreign couple who reached Pakistan after cycling through 10 different countries was robbed by muggers in Sindh’s Thatta district, it emerged on Sunday.
The police had lodged a first-information report (FIR) on the behalf of the state and launched investigations into the incident.
An official at the Sindh archaeology department, however, told Geo News that the couple, who was visiting historical sites in the province, was robbed in the Makli graveyard, home to nearly half a million tombs and graves of royals, sufi saints and others.
“The couple stayed in Makli graveyard last night [Saturday night] where the muggers robbed them,” the assistant at the archaeology department confirmed. He said that couple was the guest of the provincial archaeology department.
Following the incident, the couple left for Hyderabad.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had said that the incident has brought the country into disrepute and such treatment of guests would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Taking notice of the incident, DIG Hyderabad suspended DIB in-charge Abdul Haq Bidar.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar had also taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the Sujawal SSP. The home minister also directed the police to take swift action against the suspects involved in the incident.
